As you navigate your daily routine or partake in a special gathering, the last thing you wish to fret about is whether your accessories are functioning correctly. There’s nothing more frustrating than catching sight of your necklace in the bathroom mirror only to realize that the exquisite design is actually on the reverse of your neck, and the fastener is front and center, as if mocking you. Do we really need to be on a perpetual necklace watch, fiddling with it during meals?
Driven to solve this issue without the perpetual stress, especially during dressed-up occasions or when capturing moments in photos—be it weddings, showers, parties, or other events—I sought advice from makeup artists, hairstylists, and even my grandmother. The wealth of suggestions was a mixed bag. Thankfully, there’s a vintage trick that has been whispered among the masses for years, and it’s astonishingly straightforward. The ingredient you need might already be in your bathroom cabinet. Just like our well-known tip for donning heavy earrings without stretching your lobes, the solution is simpler than you’d imagine.

Clear nail polish has been a well-kept secret for keeping jewelry in place for hours on end, being gentle on the skin while remaining effective. All you have to do is dab a tiny amount of clear nail polish on the skin behind your neck and press the necklace clasp onto it. Let it dry, and your necklace will remain secure and prevent any rotation. Warm water and soap are all it takes to remove the clear nail polish when you’re done.
It’s been said that clear nail polish serves as a barrier between jewelry and air, helping to prevent tarnishing, making it safe to use without damaging your accessories. However, it’s advisable to steer clear of using it on gemstones and stick to the metal parts.
Makeup artists also suggest using eyelash glue to keep your clasp in place; it’s incredibly effective, though not everyone will have it on hand. It’s easily accessible at any drugstore or beauty boutique, and it’s wise to keep some at home for any necklace or eyelash emergencies. Just apply a small dot of eyelash glue to the back of your neck where you want the clasp to stay, and press the clasp into it until it dries. Like the clear nail polish, warm water and soap can take care of the eyelash glue when you no longer need it.
While slightly less effective, double-sided or fashion tape can also be employed to ensure necklaces stay put on the backside of your neck. However, it can be more noticeable, especially for those with shorter hair or those sporting an updo.
For those who find their necklaces getting tangled when wearing multiple pieces, there’s a simple solution. Before slipping them on, lay out the necklaces unfastened. Attach one end of one necklace to the clasp of the other, creating the illusion of a single necklace made from both. Wrap the connected necklaces twice around your neck, ensuring the shorter necklace is pulled tighter than the longer one. Position them as you like on your neck, with both clasps at the back, and you’re all set. Say goodbye to necklace mishaps!
