Adhering to a consistent schedule can streamline your time and enhance the predictability and ease of your daily life. Yet, stepping away from your usual patterns can also bring about positive outcomes, particularly for cognitive function. Nicole Issa, Psy.D., the founder of PVD Psychological Associates in Rhode Island, emphasizes, “Staying locked into routine behaviors is not conducive to memory over time.” She adds, “In reality, it can impede any potential enhancements.” Discover more about the optimal timing and rationale for altering your habits.

Established habits are essential; they simplify tasks, enhance efficiency, and are crucial in maintaining consistency in activities like sleep and exercise. Nonetheless, according to Rebecca Duffy, a licensed counselor and clinical director at EvolvedMD, fresh experiences are vital to keeping the mind agile. “If we engage in the same actions daily, our brains are not exposed to new challenges,” she notes.

Duffy elaborates that breaking from your regular routine prompts your brain to engage consciously rather than rely on habitual and procedural memories that operate subconsciously. “New experiences encourage the brain to forge new neural pathways, fostering brain plasticity, which is the foundation of learning and memory adaptability,” Duffy asserts. “In essence, introducing a new routine disrupts the status quo, compelling the brain to pay attention, concentrate, and contemplate, all of which aid in memory consolidation.”

Issa advises starting this process gradually. “Just as with any life change, if you attempt to alter too much at once, you might risk setting yourself up for failure,” she cautions. Issa suggests modifying an element of your daily routine that you aim to enhance. “For example, if I find myself merely eating and mindlessly scrolling through my phone during my lunch break at work, I might opt to take my lunch outside of the office and sit outdoors,” she explains. “This shift in setting can refresh your surroundings and help you break away from aimless phone scrolling.”

Seeking inspiration to begin? Issa and Duffy offer some suggestions below.

Engage in a new activity daily, such as reading or picking up a new hobby like painting or learning a new language. If you have children, dedicate time each day to try a new activity together, such as crafting or baking. Explore the culinary arts by preparing or tasting new cuisines. Initiate a DIY project, such as knitting a scarf.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to altering your routine. You may even find that it positively impacts other aspects of your life. “Diverse activities keep the brain engaged and dynamic, which also uplifts your mood overall,” Duffy remarks.
